Moist Favorite Creative Agencies Part 4: Hoodzpah
4 min read
When Great Design Becomes More Than Client Work
Some creative studios build brands.
Others build businesses around their creativity.
Hoodzpah has managed to do both.
Based in Southern California, the five-person brand identity and type design studio has earned a reputation for bold branding, expressive typography, and work that’s impossible to mistake for anyone else’s. But what makes Hoodzpah especially interesting isn’t just the client work. It’s everything they’ve built alongside it.

More Than a Design Studio
Hoodzpah’s portfolio is packed with standout identity systems and lettering projects, but they haven’t stopped there.
They’ve written a book, created an online course for freelancers, built a thriving creative community, launched a type foundry, hosted workshops, and spoken at design events around the world.
It all points to something bigger than a successful agency.
They’re constantly creating, sharing what they’ve learned, and investing back into the creative industry. For anyone hoping to build a lasting design business, Hoodzpah has quietly left behind plenty of clues.

Typography Is Their Signature
Every studio has something that ties its work together.
For Hoodzpah, it’s typography.
Letters aren’t just there to communicate information—they become part of the personality. Whether it’s a custom wordmark, expressive lettering, or a complete visual identity, typography is the thread running through almost everything they create.
Even though every project feels different, you can recognize the care and craftsmanship behind the type almost immediately.

Smart Ideas Hidden in the Details
One project that perfectly captures their approach is the rebrand for Industrial Light & Magic.
The new identity respects the company’s history while introducing something entirely fresh. At first glance, the wordmark feels clean and understated. Look a little closer, though, and the typography reveals a clever nod to film itself—the letterforms subtly create the shape of a film strip.
From there, the system keeps unfolding. Motion, layouts, and small illustrations all reinforce the identity, including a thoughtful graphic that connects the company’s global studios with a single continuous line.
It’s the kind of work that rewards a second look.

Why Hoodzpah is a Moist Favorite Creative Agency
What I appreciate most about Hoodzpah is the range.
They’re producing incredible client work while also finding new ways to teach, create, experiment, and contribute to the design community.
Jennifer and Amy Hood, along with the rest of the team, have built something that extends far beyond a traditional agency. Their work is playful, smart, and full of personality, and it’s obvious they genuinely love making things.
If you want to see where great branding, typography, and creative entrepreneurship come together, Hoodzpah is well worth following.
That’s exactly why they’re one of our Moist Favorite Creative Agencies.
