Moist Favorite Creative Agencies Part 7: Young Jerks

4 min read

There are some agencies where you can look at their work and immediately understand what they’re really good at.

Young Jerks is one of those agencies.

The Brooklyn-based brand and packaging studio describes itself as being “Run by Hyper-Intelligent Golden Retrievers,” which honestly feels pretty accurate. Their work is smart and incredibly polished, but it also has a sense of humor and personality that makes you want to keep looking.

Most importantly, they make packaging that makes you want to pick something up off a shelf and go, “Wow. This looks cool. I need this thing.”

And they’re damn good at it.

For brands that live on a shelf, packaging isn’t just another place to put the logo. It’s one of the most tangible parts of the brand.

It’s what people see from across the aisle. It’s what they pick up. It’s what ends up sitting on their kitchen counter. And, eventually, it’s what gets ripped open and thrown away.

Young Jerks seems to understand that from the very beginning of a project.

They don’t treat packaging as something that happens after the branding is finished. The identity and the packaging are developed together, so everything has to work as one system. The logo needs to work on the package. The typography needs to work with the shape of the package. The illustrations, colors, materials, and all the little details have to feel like they belong together.

So when they show a client a “logo,” it isn’t just sitting by itself on a presentation slide.

It’s already living in the world it was designed for. And that’s where the work gets really good.

Their portfolio is full of packaging that feels distinctive without trying too hard. Some projects are bold and colorful, some are weird and playful, and some are beautifully simple. But they all have that same ability to make you stop and actually look at the product.

Another thing I really appreciate about Young Jerks is the effort they put into showing their work once it’s finished.

Their project pages are filled with custom mockups and art direction that feel like they were made specifically for the project—not something they grabbed off Creative Market and dropped the design onto.

There’s sparkling foil. Fish. Weird little scenes. Fun photography. All kinds of details that make the work feel like a real, physical thing. And honestly, I think that part deserves more credit than it usually gets.

As design agencies, we can spend weeks making something incredible and then show it as a flat image on a blank background.

Young Jerks understands that how you present the work is part of the work.

Their mockups help you see the packaging as an object, not just a design. They give the projects a little more personality and make you want to spend time looking at them.

Which is probably exactly what you want from a portfolio.

You heard that right, they make board games. And who doesn’t love board games?

Honestly, I think a board game is one of the greatest projects you can have in a portfolio. You get branding, packaging, illustration, typography, storytelling, and a whole physical experience wrapped into one project.

Young Jerks has made quite a few, and they’re beautiful.

They’re funny, they’re full of personality, and the illustrations are—well, they’re really freaking good.

It’s one of those things that makes their portfolio feel bigger than just a collection of branding projects. They clearly enjoy making things, and that comes through in the work.

And I think that’s ultimately what I like most about Young Jerks.

They make really thoughtful branding, but they don’t make it feel overly serious. Their work is clever, tangible, playful, and built to actually exist in the world. They make work that’s genuinely fun to look at, but still incredibly well considered. And when you can make someone stop, pick something up, and think, “I want that,” I’d say you’re doing something right.

That makes Young Jerks an easy choice for a Moist Favorite Creative Agency.
